The Business Headshot. 2 Simple tips to prepare you for a perfect photograph.
Updated: Feb 14, 2018
Getting a great profile picture for your business or social media account is important. The thumbnail is the first thing most people will look at when landing on your page. Great images and stunning results can be gained by applying some simple measures before you even sit in front of the professional photographer.
I have been photographing professionally for close to 20 years and it has given me a lot of time to get the technical stuff right, but it also comes down to you, the subject, and what you can do to help make it a great experience and additionally having a killer profile headshot. So here are two tips that you can do before stepping out for your sitting.
No 1. Clothing. Simple clothing and jewellery options. Do not make this too fussy. Solid colours and no checks or crazy patterns can help. Try to think of the less is more approach. Jewellery should be kept to a minimum. Males should keep to very clean pallet white, blues and greys are particularly pleasing and neutral. Simplicity is the key to a headshot that will stand the test of time.
No 2. Hair and Make-up. Grooming is so important. Make sure you are well groomed and bring a brush or comb just in case. Make-up can be problematic for females, especially if you have a shiny foundation. Try to go for a matte finish foundation. Flash photography can make you look very glossy and not very flattering. A good photographer will have a pot of matt foundation with them for this purpose, which can help in some situations. Men can also suffer from head shine, especially those with a hairless patty on top! Check your beard or tash, trim the nose hair and watch the eyebrows.
While a good photographer will re-touch and edit your image in post-production, we can still consider these tips to help the process. Just these two tips can make the experience so much better for both you and your photographer. While there are a few other tips to consider let us stop here for now.
